About Sand and Stone Explained

An independent reading guide to the everyday mineral materials under roads, floors, drains and gardens, written for people who simply want to understand them.

Updated 10 October 2026By the editors

Almost every hard surface you walk or drive on sits on a layer of crushed rock, gravel or sand that nobody looks at. People still end up reading a delivery ticket, choosing a material for a drain, or wondering whether the sand in a play box is safe. This guide exists to explain those materials plainly and to show where each statement comes from.

What this site is

Sand and Stone Explained is a set of reference-style pages. They start with what aggregates are and how they are made, move on to sizes and grading, and give a full page to silica dust and quarry safety as public health bodies describe it. Shorter pages cover individual uses, from concrete and mortar to pool filter sand.

Independent, and not a business

This is an independent educational publication. It is not a business and is not affiliated with any quarry, producer, supplier, contractor, practice, company or agency. It does not produce, sell, deliver, quote or stock any material, it cannot recommend a supplier or a product, and it publishes no prices, opening hours or ordering contacts. If a page ever reads like an advertisement for a particular company, that is a mistake and the editors want to hear about it.

Who writes it

The pages are written and maintained by the Sand and Stone Explained editors, a small independent team. We do not claim professional credentials, site experience or personal stories for any page. Where a page states a fact, a figure or a rule, it comes from a public source named at the foot of that page so you can read it yourself.

What it is not

It is general information. It is not engineering, legal, environmental or health advice, and it cannot tell you what specification a particular job needs or what rules apply to a particular site. Standards and regulations differ between countries, regions and local authorities. Your own engineer, building authority or workplace-safety regulator has the final word, and the safety pages say so each time it matters.

For how sources are chosen, checked and corrected, read the editorial standards.

The short version

An independent, sourced primer on sand, gravel and crushed stone. It explains what the materials are and what public bodies say about them, and it leaves the buying, building and compliance to you and the people qualified to advise you.
